Hair? Covered in wisdom and wit? Numbered when bound to be read? Ay...
Anyway, like Philly, I was thinking something along the lines of paper or pages, so leaves, with its double meaning, makes sense, I guess, except for the '...cloth where the dinner guests sit' part, which I don't get. Can someone explain?

Hair is an interesting guess... however the answer is actually:

"Leaves"

This was a challenge though, since it used the double meaning of the word. ie. covered with wisdom and wit refers to text on the leaves of a book.
