Mates unbalanced,Or so they seem; But paired in tandem,A deadly team. She so gently round,Him so firm and straight,Yet when they are compounded,Woe to them they hate.

bow and arrow looks obvious but bow is not gently round. I am thinking this is a more complex puzzle.

But you CAN make a compound bow, which would support the bow & arrow answer.

I like the bow and arrow answer but I believe its not correct, You have two types of “compound ‘ in Archery a compound Bow which is not gentle but a collaboration of wheels to reduce pulling strain but at the same time increasing power, the other refers to the compound layers of wood in a bow.

The answer is a trigger mechanism in a gun or bomb the riddle makes two references to chemicals, the first line unbalanced and compound, the basic trigger is a pin in tandem to a round striking plate, when they meet boom. Woe to them they hate.

The last line is a bit extreme for a bow and arrow which is not nearly a fatal as a bullet or bomb.

I’m gonna have to go with the bow here too, in honor of Valentine’s day and all. But if not,how about a catapult, or a trebuchet?
Mates unbalanced, the bullet (a round stone) and the counterweight….
The mast arm connecting both would be straight…
And the woe part just speaks for itself!!
Or maybe I’m just running with the more militaristic thing because of the bow….

Perhaps it is a sword and a shield. If you assume the shield is round, of course. In tandem, a deadly combination.

    Bow and Arrow

    A deadly team. -> Obvious
She so gently round, -> The Bow
Him so firm and straight, -> The bowstring into which you nock your arrow.
Yet when they are compounded, -> A type of bow
Woe to them they hate. -> Obvious

I hate these “English-type” puzzles. You can never be sure of an answer. The maths ones are cool, Like the Two Ropes Problem”

I like the Sword and Shield answer, but I think the exclamation point answer is right!!! (compounded woe to the archers out there, the pen is mightier than the sword, right?)

    its not a bow
the first part states is a contridiction or something
two things that are in no way similair but have a deadly side affect when combined
a bow and arrow are incredibly related

    I think its a symbol – %
    The slant suggests unbalanced
You have the round and the straight
And anyone who has recently had their home repossessed by a bank can tell you that when an interest rate compounds AGAINST you – you better look out…
